Magna Carta for Filipino Seafarers Delayed in Signing by Marcos

The signing of the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was unexpectedly delayed on February 26, 2024.

The legislation, initially certified as urgent by Marcos in September 2023, aims to protect the rights and ensure the welfare of Filipino seafarers by outlining fair working conditions, standardized employment contracts, and quality training guidelines.

The House of Representatives reportedly withdrew the bill from the signing ceremony at the last minute. While reasons for the delay haven't been officially disclosed, some sources suggest the need for further review.

This development has generated various reactions, with advocacy groups expressing concern about the delay and urging the swift passage of the Magna Carta.

It remains unclear when the bill will be signed into law.
