The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, that the damage to the agriculture sector due to El Niño has surpassed P1 billion.
Western Visayas was the most heavily impacted region, with P678.7 million in agricultural losses. Mimaropa (P319.8 million), Ilocos (P54.5 million), Calabarzon (P2.8 million), and Zamboanga Peninsula (P717.5 thousand) also reported significant damage.
The NDRRMC stated that the dry spells and drought associated with El Niño have affected over 17,700 hectares of crops and impacted 23,000 farmers and fisherfolk. Water shortages for both drinking and agricultural purposes have also been reported in several areas, including six barangays in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, since December 2023.
